Project 579: Custom Skyboxes and Environments

2. (Group Activity) How does a Skybox work?

What is a skybox? How does it work?
This challenge doesn't have a starting point

Steps

1. What is a skybox?

Many video games, not just Roblox, put their levels and scenes inside of a 6-sided box. Printed around the sides of the box are images of the sky.

You don’t see “seams” or the corners of the box, because the images on each side are seamless, flowing right into each other.

2. How can we make our own?

We’ll be creating one main image to be the sides of our Skybox, and another separate one to be our ceiling.

3. Tip 1 - Keep all unique textures in the middle of your canvas

Things like clouds or stars should stay in the middle of your canvas, instead of trailing off.

This will make tiling, or creating a seamless look, a lot easier.

4. Tip 2 - Keep the top, or “ceiling” a single color

Having designs or gradients on the ceiling could make the sky appear “upside down.” The example image shows an "upside down" ceiling.

5. Tip 3 - Place gradients and designs near the top half of the canvas

The Roblox baseplate ends up in about the “middle” of your canvas screen. You’ll want most of your cloud designs near the top half of your canvas.

6. Tip 4 - Be creative!!

The walkthrough example will make a standard blue, sunny sky - but you can do anything!

Will your world have a pink, cotton candy sunset? A sci-fi outer space sky? Fiery and volcanic? Rainy and grey? Underwater, with fish instead of clouds?
